PREFACE

It was a hot summer day in March 2023, and I found myself walking in circles through Diu’s maze of narrow streets; lost, confused, and relying on fragmented signs and word-of-mouth directions in a language I didn’t understand.
Why was discovering Diu so hard for tourists?
What began as an architectural study of movement, access, and user experience for residents, initially approached only through physical lens, turned into a different one...
What if this experience could be made clearer through a digital lens?
Here’s how I turned an urban design case study into a heritage tourism app.
THE PROBLEM
The core issue was Diu's most significant monuments were being overlooked, not due to lack of interest, but due to difficulty in navigation.
Tourists and students visiting Diu struggled to navigate the island’s heritage sites due to confusing streets and incomplete information, often leading to frustration and missed cultural landmarks.

how might we make navigation easier for first-time visitors?

how might we encourage visitors to visit hidden historical sites?

how might we make the experience of Diu more informative?

how might we make the experience of Diu more informative?
THE SOLUTION
The ideation process was a direct response to the user needs identified. Translating the insights into three foundational pillars that would guide the design:
Personalized Navigation
Contextual Awareness
Ease of Access

THE DESIGN
Diu Discovery is a one-stop mobile app for exploring the island's heritage with ease. It combines these key features to ensure a seamless tour:
Live-tracking heritage walks for effortless navigation, that allows users to visit the heirtage sites in Diu without the fear of getting lost.
Automatic audio guides for hands-free storytelling.
A one-stop destination to unlock detailed stories about each heritage site.
Additional QR scanner for accessing the information with more ease.
Photo-wall entries - an integrated feature that works along with the Interpretation Center designed by us during the Urban Design Project.
The key screens below demonstrate the primary user flow and the visual design to make exploring Diu an accessible and memorable experience.
